Senate Suspends Amendment of CCB Act

SENATE CHAMBER DURING THE INAUGURATION OF THE 8TH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY IN ABUJA ON TUESDAY (9/6/15). 3023/9/6/2015/CH/BJO/NAN

The Nigerian senate has suspended the process of amending the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) Act and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

The decision to suspend the process was reached at the executive session of the senate presided over by Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, on Wednesday.

The senate also shelved a report of the committee on ethics and privileges on Kabir Marafa, Zamfara central, who was initially pencilled down for disciplinary action.

The CCB Act was laid on the floor of the upper legislative chamber last Tuesday.

It was brought to the senate by Peter Nwaoboshi, a senator from Delta north.

It passed second reading, and it was referred to the committees on Judiciary, ethics and privileges last Thursday, amid public outcry.

The planned amendment of the Act was construed by some Nigerians to be an attempt to give Senate President Bukola Saraki leverage in his ongoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for false declaration of assets.
