You May Not Be as Lucky as Bakassi Strike Force — GOC Warns New Militant Groups

The General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Maj Gen Jamil Sarham, has warned new militant groups in the Niger Delta that they may not be as lucky as members of the defunct Bakassi Strike Force who were granted amnesty after they surrendered their weapons and embraced peace in 2018.

Maj Gen Sarham was speaking as a guest of honour at the inauguration of the newly constructed 8-bedroom Component Commanders’ accommodation and detention facility at Eburutu Military Cantonment in Calabar.

He said, “I am aware that other militant groups have taken over the creeks again and posing a serious threat to law-abiding people of the state who ply the waterways. I want to assure you that these groups of militants may not be as lucky as the defunct Bakassi Strike Force that has embraced peace.

“I wish to put it on record that it was as a result of the sector’s concerted kinetic and non-kinetic operations that compelled the defunct Bakassi Strike Force and the Boki Youths Support for Development and Selfless Leaders to seek for amnesty.

“A lot has been achieved despite the quantum challenges associated with riverine operations which is prevalent in the region. It behooves on all to step up and come up with new methods to meet the emerging challenges in the Joint Operations Area.”

He commended the outgoing Sector 4 Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Col Bende Amakor for constructing the facilities, saying “accommodation has been a recurring decimal across the services. It, therefore, gladdens my heart when commanders go the extra mile within their meagre resources to provide one for their personnel.”
