David De Gea Unbeatable at Anfield

Liverpool fans must be sick of the sight of Manchester United’s no.1 David De Gea, Manchester United official club website claims.

For the second successive season, the Spaniard helped secure the Reds a well-earned point at Anfield with a wonder-save to deny Joel Matip from close range thanks to a brilliant reflex save in the first half.

His heroics equally came to United’s rescue in the corresponding stalemate last season – memorably diving low to stop Emre Can, before tipping Philippe Coutinho’s curling effort wide of the post when it looked destined to bulge the net.

The 26-year-old has now kept seven clean sheets in eight Premier League matches this season and, with that, the Reds have now beaten our best-ever clean sheet record when it comes to the start of a Premier League campaign, following the shut-out against our arch-rivals. In fact, United now hold a total of 18 clean sheets in 2017, which is the most in the Premier League. Commenting on the crucial save, which denied Liverpool defender Matip, De Gea told MUTV: “Everything happened so quickly. I put my foot out as quickly as possible and saved the ball, so I’m happy for that.”

De Gea was ably assisted by a dogged and professional defensive team performance and his United team-mates had some well-earned praise for their goalkeeper. Nemanja Matic, who made his first appearance in the North-West derby clash, told MUTV: “They [Liverpool] had some great chances and David [De Gea], as always, was perfect and that’s why he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” he said.

“I’m happy that he’s playing well and we didn’t concede a goal because of him. It’s always important for goalkeepers [to not concede].” Matteo Darmian, who like Matic was impressive in standing firm at Anfield, added: “Like I have said in some interviews before, I think David [De Gea] in this moment is the best goalkeeper in the world, so we are lucky to have him in our squad. I think he is a great goalkeeper!”

The Reds are now unbeaten in the last seven Premier League meetings against Liverpool and that is mainly down to De Gea. That has not gone unnoticed by former Liverpool legend Graeme Souness.

He told Sky Sports: “That [save to deny Matip] is a fantastic save. For a goalkeeper, it doesn’t always have to be with your hands. That is David De Gea, you see him making these saves all the time with his feet. He’s alert, he’s alive and he knows that’s his best chance of keeping it out. And then he’s up again!”

De Gea’s performances against Liverpool have quite simply been phenomenal and he continues to prove why he is arguably the best goalkeeper in world football. Like Souness, even Liverpool fans would find it hard to disagree.
