David Cameron has resigned as Prime Minister after Britain voted to leave the European Union, The Telegraph reports.
Cameron made the announcement about 8.15am local time (5.15pm AEDT) outside Downing Street.
He said it was not a decision he took lightly, and that he expected a new prime minister to be in place before the Conservative Party conference in October.
“I do not think it will be right for me to be the captain to steer the country to the next destination,” he said.
“The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered.
“There can be no doubt about the result.”
Cameron had been the “Remain” campaign’s most vocal and public supporter, making the success of the “Leave” camp particularly humiliating for the PM.
Britain voted to leave the European Union with 52 percent of the nation siding with the Brexit “Leave” camp.
