Manchester United manager José Mourinho on Sunday hailed France midfielder Paul Pogba’s imminent arrival from Juventus, describing the move as “amazing”.
Both clubs confirmed that Pogba was due to undergo a medical at United concluding the longest-running transfer saga of the close season.
Pogba, who left United in 2012, is expected to cost the English giants a world-record transfer fee of around $130.4 million.
Speaking after United’s 2-1 win over Leicester City in the Community Shield at Wembley, Mourinho told BT Sport: “It’s amazing that such a good player is with us.
“Finally we have him. He comes to a winning side — a team who have won their last two matches, in the FA Cup (last season) and today. He has to work hard to come to the team.”
This is coming as José Mourinho won the first trophy of the new season in his first competitive game as Manchester United manager and immediately dedicated it to his predecessor. Without Louis van Gaal, he pointed out, United would not have been involved in the Community Shield at Wembley.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to Louis van Gaal,” he said. “I don’t mind him having one more trophy, and I remember when I have left clubs who have gone on to win things they don’t always recognise who helped them get there. So this win is for him and in addition I dedicate it to the Manchester United players who were not involved in the game. It was difficult to leave out good players like Memphis Depay, Phil Jones and Ashley Young, but I had to make choices. We are a team and they understand that.”
