One injured, families escape death as building collapses in Lagos

An unidentified man sustained injuries in the wee hours of Wednesday while four families escaped by whiskers after a two-storey building collapsed in Lagos, The Nation reports.

The incident occurred at 15. Oke Arin Street, off Shyllon, Ilupeju, around 12:40 am.

This is coming barely two weeks after a church building under construction collapsed opposite Number 17, Cardoso Street off Martins Street, Mushin.

It was gathered the four families that occupied the Ilupeju building took their heels when they noticed crack sounds from the old building before it eventually collapsed.

As at the time of this report, emergency workers had cordoned off the place to prevent secondary disaster.

However, the families who fled were seen rummaging in the debris in search of their belongings.

Confirming the incident, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the injured man was taken to the hospital.

He did not provide the identity of the man nor disclose the hospital he was taken to.

Oke-Osanyintolu said: “Fortunately, no loss of life. However, one adult male sustained minor injury and has been taken to hospital. The affected building has been condoned off in order to prevent any threat until operation concluded.”
