Lawmakers Accuse Saraki of Endorsing IPOB

Senate President Bukola Saraki

A group of members of the House of Representatives, under the aegis of the Progressive Caucus, has described comments made by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on the Indigenous People of Biafra’s proscription as an endorsement of the group’s activities, Punch reports.

Saraki had on Monday described IPOB’s proscription by the military and South-East governors as unconstitutional.

He had gone on to say, “Our laws make clear provisions for taking such actions and without the due process being followed, such declaration cannot have effect.”

However, the House Majority Whip, Ado Doguwa, had criticised the Senate President over his views on the subject.

Towing Doguwa’s path, members of the Progressive Caucus in the House on Friday castigated Saraki over his comments.

Their views were contained in a statement signed by Aliyu Madaki, Sani Zorro and Mohammed Soba.

Members of the caucus said they were shocked beyond belief that Saraki could make such a statement because what he had done is to “willy-nilly endorsed the murderous activities of the proscribed IPOB.”

This, they argued, was based on arguments that were bereft of reason, rationality or logic.

The lawmakers further argued that a clear pattern of overt support to the leader of the “terrorist group” [Nnamdi Kanu] had since been established under the watch of the Senate President for some time.
